AIOU Automation

AIOU, when it was founded in 1974, was the second open university in the world and the first in Asia and Africa. It therefore speaks of the foresight of the politicians of that time. As AIOU's recent years have shown, distance education has opened up new opportunities for millions, especially women, and has greatly complemented the efforts of federal and provincial governments without straining their resources.

The idea of distance education has gained more importance and acceptance in Pakistan due to the factors of poverty and relative lack of women. Literacy rates, dropout rates and higher education are much lower in Pakistan's poorer classes. The incidence of poverty is much higher in rural areas where formal education is much less established. Literacy and education rates are much lower for women in Pakistan, especially in rural areas, due to poverty and conservative traditions. Many conservative parents, under the pressure of old traditions, do not allow their daughters to go to school. AIOU thus provided educational opportunities to these girls and housewives through its distance education system. This explains the reasons why the majority of students enrolled at the university are women.
